I got tagged, twice

The Song Meme
List five songs that you are currently digging. It doesn’t matter what genre
they are from, whether they have words, or even if they’re any good, but they
must be songs you’re really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, the
artist, and the song in your journal, then tag five other people to see what
they’re listening to.

1. “Addicted to Bass” – Amiel
I totally love this song and only just got copies (yes, plural) of it last April so it’s been on high repeat!

2. “God is God” – Juno Reactor
Fantastic get-up-and-move song. I love how the rhythms wind themselves around my body.

3. “Corporate Slave” – Snog
A fave song to dance to and I’ve been wanting to go out dancing very badly lately.

4. “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” – The Blues Brothers
I can’t help but sing along with this

5. equal tie: “Untouched” – VAST
A song I’ve loved in the clubs, and which was playing when saying a very difficult goodbye.

“Chan Chan” – Ry Cooder, Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalez, Eliades Ochoa and Company
Very sensual, warm song which takes me to a place of soft red firelight, guitars, passion smouldering under people. A song full of promise.

I’m curious about what these people are listening to:

The Book Meme

As Mark Twain once said “Those who do not read have no advantage over those who can’t”.

1) Total number of books owned?

No idea…they take up about half of my storage boxes, but it never feels like I’ll own enough. One day, one day, I will have a warm library with a roomy window seat, an open fire, cushy armchairs to sink into and walls covered with books.

2) The last book I bought?

Lonely Planet guides to Northern Territory and Outback Australia by various authors

3) The last book I read?

From cover to cover and finished: “Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix” by JK Rowling
Currently flicking though intermittantly: “Meditation Revolution” by various authors
“Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Fable” by Thomaas Bulfinch
“Awaken The Giant Within” by Anthony Robbins

4) 5 books that mean a lot to me?

* “Dragonsong” by Anne McCaffrey – The first fantasy novel I ever read and still a favourite. I have read it so many times I almost know it by heart (and anyone who knows how poor my memory is will agree this is some achievement) and have had to replace my orginal copy (I’m not hard on books either)

* 3 particular story books given to me by Mum. Have not seen them in many years – I packed them away in a box with all my favourite storybooks when I was a teenager with not enough room on my shelves. The titles elude me, I think one was “Snow White and Rose Red”, one was “The Snow Queen” and the other completely slips my mind. They are beautifully made books with adorable illustrations and were Mum’s when she was a child. I can still remember the feel of them – the paper was so soft and precious.

* The May Gibbs collection given to me by my great-aunty Nan when I was seven or eight. My uncle teased me that she’d given me bricks for Christmas. At least, I think it was Aunty Nan who gave it to me. It is a beautiful box set of two books. One contains all the adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and one is a biography of May Gibbs and contains all sorts of snippetts from her stories, illustrations and doodles, and photos of her. I treasured these books when I was little and was ever so careful and particular about where I read them.

* My Japanese-English dictionary given to me by my first host sister. It has been well, well-loved over many years and even though I now have an electronic dictionary, I don’t think I could part with it.

* My Happy Book – I’m not sure if it counts, but I’m including it. It is a book full of happy thoughts, messages, poems, quotes and drawings which I have (and still am) collected from various people. This book will always come with me so that I can flick through it whenever I am feeling sad or lonely or depressed and be reminded of happier things.

You should know I don’t do meme’s 🙂

That said its 8 bookcases worth, mostly double stacked and plenty on the floor…

As for the last book I brought – I don’t tend to stop at one – but i did pick up Emma and Mansfield Park by Jane Austen and Jane Eyre by Bronte as prizes for our Regency game. I own all these for me as well. Umm… there was a large second hand book stall at pheno that I carefully didn’t look at to closely but I definately threw several at bear with the suggestion he might like them.

The Last books I read were Alias Grace and Robber Bride both by Margaret Atwood (plus a large pile of literary criticism of Atwood) I’m now re-reading The Blind Assasin and hope to visit Penny on the weekend to borrow two more Atwood novels.

Before the Atwood, and the archaeology non fiction I re-read the Pern stuff in need of brain candy.

Its two difficult to narrow down to 5 books… fair to difficult, even my list of authors would change daily.

Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are always books that I will identify with though.

Thank-you!

I’ve never read any Atwood, though I’ve looked at her books many times. What would you recommend of hers to start with?

Ooh…am excited about the latest Pern installment, and your idea sounds great but all my collection is paperback so that’s preferable….

The Handmaids Tale is probably the traditional place to start. You’ll either come out of it loving or hating 🙂 It’s the one that lots of people finde on high school booklists. For whats its worth i really like it

as for the other thing – wait til paperback it is 🙂

about the aus flight- well it looks like one flight is non transferable and the other I rescheduled for april to keep it valid- and april has come and gone, so it’s probably no longer useable.

When I think about the fact that I forfeited almost $1,000 in flights thanks to stomach flu it makes me sick to my stomach!

gypsyamberJune 17, 2005 - 11:25 am

bummer. Yeah, no shit. Enough to almost give yo the stomach flu all over again.

Adore the Handmaid’s Tale, through good fortune alone I chose to read it as a teenager. I am not quite so fond of the film adaption, butit was useful for scaring inmates at Club Glen Waverly.

Must go and get this one too, me thinks.
