It’s the little things that amuse…

Apparently wearing my hair back in a scarf makes me look “very Australian” And here I thought it just looked hippy!! Hey, does that mean all australians are hippies, or that Australia’s image is as a hippy nation, or simply that whatever I look like is transposed onto Australia as a whole and Wella! Head scarves are suddenly “Very Australian”!!!

As an experiment, we should all try wearing this to school (you, me/shanta, lisa/nitty) and see if we all get told that we look Aussie/American/British…. (Canadian if Mike will do it too!)

ooh..I like the idea…I have plenty of scarves to share around..some almost masculine – well, they’re black…lace!!!

(um, this is meant very lovingly and light-heartedly, okay?)

Please tell me ‘Wella’ isn’t supposed to be the french exclamation ‘Voila!’ ? It’s a good thing you’re teaching English and not French, young lady, *grin*. Anyhow, obligatory schoolmarmish grammar lesson from me: it’s short for voit (see) la (there).

Thus endeth the lesson. Yay for hippies, I say.

Exhibit A

Thank-you..this just drives home the discussion I was having last night with two other JETs about the dumbing-down effect Japan is having on us. Really, I shouldn’t even be teaching English at the moment..some days sentences just don’t happen for me and my English ability almost matches that of my students. A very scary and sobering thought indeed.
Thanks for the brief French lesson…I did always want to learn French and love hearing the origin of common sayings…and once-upon-a-time I did actually know the correct spelling of Viola! But the disappearence of that knowledge worries me far less than the disappearance of my English ability…

This all sounds so interesting. I haven’t kept up with my friends posts in ages, so your adventures are new to me. How wonderful to travel, and for some reason, the Australians I’ve met on LJ have always been my favorite people.

Yay for us!!!!

I’m in my eighth month here and plan to stay for another 16 months, after which I will head to India for 5 months. I’m partially using my time here to explore other countries… everything is just that much closer and more possible from here than home. Of course, the proper wage here helps as well *grin* Maybe if I’d ever had a ‘proper’ job back home, travelling wouldn’t seem such a difficult dream to fulfill!
