And the fun just keeps rollin out

Cos starting the day sleep-dep’d and drunk/hungover wasn’t bad enough.
Most of the time I can eat small amounts of dairy and have only mild reactions. But then I get complacent. Then I overindulge and am reminded that it really is a harsh allergy when provoked. Last night I partook of my two favourite bad foods: cheese and ice-cream. I have just taught two classes, trying to ignore the knives which are twisting up my insides. Now I have a half hour ride home in the rain without coat to look forward.
*puts mental foot down and crosses arms across chest* That’s it. Gonna be much better about no dairy passing my lips. Just ain’t worth it.

I _am_ going to flamenco tonight. Rain and stomach be damned. Only three lessons left til we perform at the front of the main railway station here. *gulp.quiver*

eww.. Cheese AND icecream.. yeah doubling up makes it so much worse!
Poor Ambs!
If the guts churning/stabbing isn’t bad enough, what happens after is more daunting..

If my guts are behaving I can have one ‘forbidden food’ but if I have two in a day I’m fucked.
Then again with this enormous foetus & uterus compacting on my stomach most foods aggravate me.
Cept hot chips.. oh joy!

Oh sweetie, I so sympathise. I overindulged on a holiday with Niels’ family and then so regretted it (whiskey cream sauce for the herrings!). It tastes so good though. But the after effects suck so much. And I don’t know about you, but my digestive system takes at least a week to come back to normal. Sympathy.

WHAT? you’re performing at the station!??!!! Details please!

Let’s say after tonight’s class I really think I’m more of a liability than an enhancement. I had entertained lofty dreams of inviting/telling all the people interested in seeing me dance, but no, have decided that’s definitely not a good idea. All I will be doing is my absolute best to stand out – tall gaijin who can’t dance. Yeah. Great.

I miss your parties… Smile.
One thing that may or may not be relevant… I’ve recently been looking into Caeliac’s disease (Spelling?) and one of the _symptom’s_ is dairy intolerance. So if you’ve ever had any kind of reaction to wheat it may be worth looking into that, cause it may be that the wheat intolerance is causing the dairy one and if you give up the oone you’ll eventually be able to have the other…
From experimentation it seems to work at least partially with me.

gypsyamberNovember 11, 2004 - 10:07 pm

hmmm…interesting. But no, no reaction to wheat. Phew. I think I would rather be dairy intolerent than wheat intolerent. But maybe it’s just a case of what you’re used to. If I’d been diagonosed with wheat intolerence when ten, by now that would probably seem the easer to remove from diet. I’m grateful I’m not dairy and wheat intolerent. _That_ would suck in so many ways.

I think it’s gonna be a few days at least. ugh. just gotta remember the pain when faced with the pleasure of dairy. I pretty much never eat cream, milk or cheese. I have always been able to eat yoghurt, but recently I stopped eating it everyday and after two weeks I could feel a difference. So even though there’s no reaction, I suspect it’s still not good for me. Ice cream and chocolate are the hardest for me to give up. Have you ever found any decent substitutes?

gypsyamberNovember 11, 2004 - 10:22 pm

ooh. sympathies. Having so many food which aggravate would be so horrible. I get pissed at my allergy but then I know so many people who have worse…it’s kinda, well, dairy is the _only_ thing I’m allergic to. wheat ok, nuts ok.
A friend here pointed out that the alcomahol may well have influenced how strongly I reacted..at the very least it must’ve affected my judgement! Glad I’m not allergic to alcohol. *muses what that would be like*

just hot chips huh? man, that diet will get boring after, well one day really. How much longer to go?

etsbaNovember 12, 2004 - 1:03 am

Oh I’m eating a much bigger range of food than chips! it’s just that that’s one of the only indulgence foods I can have that doesn’t come back to violently haunt me.
And I do so need indulgence food cause I can’t do anything fun – can’t drink, smoke, do drugs.. let alone manage to score a one-night stand… So yeh, indulgence food & reading magazines in bed is my idea of fun these days *self pity*.
There’s 12 and a half weeks to go til she’s born.

Your friends right, booze makes allergic reactions way worse, I think it reduces mucus levels in the gut.. or something.. guess I haven’t been paying much attention to Anatomy as I should’ve this semester.

sleazemonkeyNovember 12, 2004 - 1:13 am

i had the exact same reaction last night…. damn mexican food… covered in delicious cheese!

gypsyamberNovember 12, 2004 - 8:16 am

indulgence food and magazines sounds damn fine to me. Right now my idea of indulgence food is turkish bread, fifya’s Middle eastern hommus, and eggplant dips, sun dried tomatoes, goats feta and kalamata olives. Mmmmm that would be good. And magazines. My brain is starved of mental confectionary…well, not actuslly starved, but definitely on a diet!

gypsyamberNovember 12, 2004 - 8:22 am

oooh. mexican. so incredibly bad for me and I adore it. The combo of the copiuos amounts of cheese, and the refried beans and whew, you do not wanna come within a 1 km radius of me the next day, and I will be doubled over. Getting better at eating things cheeseless though. And nachos is still good with guacamole and decent salsa! Really (just have to forget what with with-cheese version is like!)

daisynerdNovember 13, 2004 - 12:21 pm

the short answer is no. There is nothing quite like dairy. Goats cheese is nice, but it’s strong so it’s really something else. But I did have a soy milk hot chocolate at home the other day that Niels made. And I whipped some soy cream, which went airy, but not like real whipped cream, but overall it was pretty good. Sorbet is the best in terms of icecream and they have a fantastic brand here with passionfruit, raspberry and lemon. Sometimes I try a bit of parmesan because it’s so hard that it’s almost not cheese (no really stomach, it’s not a dairy product, it’s more like a rock 🙂 ). And I just eat dark chocolate. Really dark. That keeps me sane.

thunderfoot23November 23, 2004 - 6:21 am

It does indeed, though I’ve finally found a pizza place that does wheat free bases. (Mr Vegetarian) I’m almost getting to be friends with the guy who runs it now!
Trying to avoid Guinness is my main remaining stumbling block…
I used to have trouble with lunches, but now I’m grabbing sushi from the city on my way into work. (Cause there’s very little wheat free stuff near my work unless I wanted a steak dinner every day!)
