Being oblivious to loved ones danger

is enough to make me feel sick at heart and stomach. Most of the time it doesn’t matter that I choose not to tune into news in any form. Today has made me reconsider and from now on I will tune in once a week, to find out anything I might need to know.

Thoughts and sympathy goes out to all those who have fought fires or who have loved ones who have fought fires and lost maybe their houses, their livelihoods… I am praying to know no-one who has lost themselves or a loved one.

We have been incredibly lucky, but feel helpless in the city. Rafe’s brother is still out fighting fires. Their house has been spared, with fire running either side of it, and neighbours to each side losing their houses. Rafe’s parents have been fighting the fires all night. Their house is also safe, they have lost some sheep and I imagine the little grotto where we got married probably won’t ever look the same. The Strath Creek valley has been completely burned out, but as far as we know, no lives lost.

I want to go up there to reassure myself that they are all okay, but I would be nothing more than a hinderance, and it’s probably not the safest trip to make at the moment.

I have loved ones that were lucky too. I phoned my nana today to see if they were o.k. I was lucky enough that I got through to them. They and aunts & uncles are o.k. one uncle went out helping friends when the threat to his place passed…
I still am yet to hear from my parents directly, but am assuming they are o.k.
And will be checking on my sister-in-law to be and her family shortly…

Scary when it’s in areas you know, grew up in and have grown to love…

Hugs from me too – So devastating to watch this unfold over the last few days and I feel a mixture of anger and sadness. I pray for rain, and more rain.

Happy to hear that they are well if tired worn out with fighting fires
People forget that this happens, I remeber the same things said when there was the Ash Wednesday Fires
I remeber hearing tales of similar stories for the older generation of past fires
Pass on my love

I was worried about Rafe’s folks out there in the hills – glad to hear that they’re OK. Hugs to you both.

I have memories of living in the Adelaide hills during the Ash Wednesday fires as a child, with the sun red through the smoke and ash raining from the sky while my parents packed the ute ready to run away. I will never, ever forget that. It was rain that stopped those fires, and I hope that if we don’t get good rain tonight, at least the wind dies down.

Hadn’t clicked to the fact that Rafe’s family was potentially at threat.

Glad to hear that they are alright & hugs to the both of you.
